At the start of The Immigrant, Polish refugee sisters Ewa (Marion Cotillard) and Magda (Angela Sarafyan) are thrilled to arrive at Ellis Island in 1923 New York. Their happiness is short-lived, though. Magda is diagnosed with tuberculosis and quarantined.
